14. Improving China’s Rail English: 2013
David firmly believes in giving back after learning so much knowledge. Being a native speaker of English and a frequent rail traveller, he decided to combine his main position and his areas of expertise with his principle means of transport, and launched the Everyday Rail English series of content and lessons in January 2013, after trialling this a year earlier.
Everyday Rail English has benefitted from a hugely encouraging reception, both within the railway world and in the wider communities in China. This made him the focus point of many a media interview, as well as appearing as the back-page feature on China’s official rail daily, People’s Railway Daily, in July 2013.
Lessons were extremely popular; these were given to rail authorities in eastern, central, and western China, as well as a nationwide English seminar in late 2013. Key to this was a database of standardised English to be used for all of China. An increasing number of stations and rail service crews are using these new standards.
14. 2013 年：改善中国铁路英文语言环境
冯琰的一个根本为人处事的原则就是：掌握知识后，一定要及时从所学到的知识，将其成品还给社会。因他的母语实质上是英文，并因他经常乘坐铁路，所以冯琰决定，将他的主要事业（教师）和主要的知识（英文）同其经常乘坐的交通工具（铁路）合并在一起。因此，他决定于 2013 年 1 月起，正式发起“铁路英文一天一句”。
“铁路英文一天一句”可以说是在互联网上“一炮打响”，并受铁路界内外广泛关注，许多媒体也因此广泛关注冯琰的铁路英文方面的一举一动。2013 年 7 月中旬，冯琰成为中国铁路界官方报刊《人民铁道》的重要推荐内容，并有报刊反面的整版专访。
“铁路英文一天一句”系列内容、讲座，以及其衍生的双鱼内容，广泛收到各界关注。铁路英文讲堂，讲到了东部、中部和西部地区，并在全国范围内通过微博实时专访，于 2013 年 11 月进行了一次全国性网上“大学习”。成为“铁路英文一天一句”内容的核心为全新的，质量有明显改进的，创建是就本着全国统一的铁路英文新对照表。越来越多的列车和车站，正在使用新的词语。
